This project originally began with the collection of 5 years worth of homework and notes on loose leaf notebook paper (mostly Ashley's calculus notes). We also spent time collecting data on the type seeds that we would like to use; we based our choice of Yarrow on this data. We looked for a plant that was hearty, drought resistant, native to New Mexico, and had multiple uses.
In order make the paper we first put the loose leaf through a paper shredder and filled a garbage bag. The shredded paper was then put into blenders mixed with water, pureed, and then placed into shallow tubs of water. This watered down paper pulp was strained with 12"x18" screens and set aside to dry until the pulp is thin and crispy. Once the pulp has dried on the screen into a sheet of paper, it is gently removed front the screen and cut to the desired sizes.
The participation of the public is a big part of this project. The goal is to distribute this paper to as many indidviduals as possibly with the hope that they will answer our prompt, "What do you want to see grow?" The question can be interpreted literally or figurativly, in words or pictures, poetry or bullet points, however the audience desires. The public participants included staff and students at UNM, visitors to the UNM Sustainability Expo and the UNM College of Fine Arts Arts Unexpected day, as well students at Santa Fe's Monte Del Sol Charter School and Barcelona Elementary and Pre-School Program.
